We ended April and started May with a nice trip to the beach (Destin area).
We spent much of our time reading. A and I both finished 2-3 books apiece. Even the girls got in their fair share of reading, with their nose in books pretty much all day. That's my idea of a vacation!
While we were there, we celebrated R's third birthday.
We also stopped at The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. The museum was sold out, so we couldn't get in, but we were able to walk through the memorial. It was a sobering reminder of our country's unjust history and the work of justice that remains to be done. This was a privately funded memorial, organized by an author of one of our favorite books (Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, who also founded the Equal Justice Initiative).
Also in May, the company I co-founded in 2011 celebrated it's 7th year with a party. I've really enjoyed my time with this group of folks. I'm very fortunate to get to work with a team of people that are both smart and kind.
We also went to Chattanooga for Memorial Day weekend. We got a backstage pass to the aquarium and the girls got to feed a lemur and pet a penguin. The weather was really quite nice (it always seems to be boiling hot when we are visiting Chattanooga) and we spent a lot of time enjoying the downtown area, as usual.
We also visited my grandparents. It was sweet to see my grandmother, 88, talk with the girls and hold them. My grandfather, 88, still gardens and we got to talk about what he's been planting and see the golden pheasants that he keeps.
We also voted in the Nashville mayoral election. It was a special election due to a resignation, so they poll workers seemed quite bored and very happy to talk to our girls and shower them with stickers and candy.
Of course, April and May are also a time for planting and growing. The city is so green and lush in the spring, almost becoming jungle-like.
We also celebrated C's birthday, too!
It's not officially summer yet, but our summer really starts once the YMCA pool is open (Memorial Day). We've already made multiple trips this week. The girls love it because they get to see all their neighborhood friends and I love it because it's an opportunity to read!
